23. Tathastu

A common foreman in a factory, the only earning member of a small happy family of three, a helping and a honest - sincere and helping man; that is Ravi Rajput.

But destiny has its say when he comes to know that his son has a weak heart and if a heart transplant surgery is not undertaken on him immediately, the young Rajput will die for sure. And luckily all the conditions are favourable for him – he has a perfect match heart available (someone had donated it a day ago); the best of the doctors are available. And for meager fees of Rs 15 Lakhs only, the young Rajput can get a new life.

Rs 15 Lakh. How can Ravi Rajput manage to get this amount and that too in two days? Lets see – he has got health insurance for the child for 5 years (just that it has lapsed because premium is not paid), he has been working in the factory for over 11 years, definitely they would be able to give some loan; and his friends too owe him money; and some his friends can lend him. The sum should not be a big problem for him.

But the reality is far from so straightforward. The policy cannot be renewed because the child is already on operation bed, his friends cant return/lend him money because they themselves don’t have it, his company wont lend him even a lakh of rupees against a 12 year service bond and his savings is all gone in the preliminary examination.

Well he can request the doctors to do the operation right away and he can pay later. But the big hospitals have their costs of operation theatre, the operation staff, the wards and lots more.

Dejected Ravi has to take an extreme step and he takes hostage of the lowermost floor of the hospital. For once, the doctor is ready to go ahead with the operation, but the story has to take a twist. Just after Ravi was diagnosed with heart problem, a political icon with same problem arrives and co-incidentally he also needs a heart transplant and the only perfect match heart available is registered for young Rajput. And then there are lots of political factors inclining the hospital management towards serving the politician.

Among all the twists and turns, where the media is pouncing to get a story, the police is striving to get (rid of Ravi Rajput and hence get) the situation under control at all costs, the hostages wanting to go back home, the politicians wanting to get the icon (and hence the unstable political scenario) in control, finally Ravi Rajput has decided to take the ultimate step of murder. With whatever few thousand rupees he managed to collect, he got a firearm!

Who does Ravi murder? Does he manage to get heart/money for transplant? Does young Rajput get a new life?

Tathastu is a pretty much bollywood remake of “John Q” starring Denzel Washington. I haven’t seen the latter, but the storyline is same for sure.

Tathastu is not very fast and first half seems quite lethargic. It somewhere points the importance of “savings” for a common man and the dilemma he is often put into. The movie has negligible violence contents, pretty much a family movie. And most importantly it does make you think – what would you do if it was you instead of Ravi Rajput.
