22. 15, Park Avenue
This is a story set in Kolkatta. Meetali - Meethi (Konkana Sensharma) stays with her elder sister – Anu Mathur (Shabana Azmi). The first scene of the movie shows both people out in Didi’s car searching for 15 Park Avenue. Mahesh-Padma are their brother and sister-in-law have three kids, Shreya and Samir and a new born Shalini. Waheeda Rehman is the elder-most of the family, mother of Meethi.
Meethi is a little mentally dis-oriented suffering from Schizophrenia. She believes she is married to Joydeep Roy or Jojo, working in Baghdad and has returned to 15 Park Avenue somewhere in Calcutte from there because of the war between US and Iraq at the turn of the millennia. She believes she has 5 children – Naintara, Nilanjan, Urmila, and Vikram and Ayesha.
Sanjiv and Anu are co-lecturers in a college and Sanjiv has got an offer from Princeton University. Of course Sanjiv loves Anu, only to find that Anu’s priorities are not favourable for “their” life.
Several medications conventional and unconventional have been tried for Meethi including witch-craft techniques (unconventional ones without knowledge of Anu); but Meethi is not ready to accept the reality, that her World is not real.
One evening among all the botherations of completing an article and coping with Sanjiv and not believing Meethi;s acquisition that she is being tortured at hands of a witchcraftsman, she does not believe Meethi and Meethi slashes her wrist. Anu comes across a new Doctor for Meethi. Dr Kunal (Dhritiman Chaterji) explain the situation to Anu in detail suggests a change of place. And possibly the regular meetings between Anu and Kunal (who is already married) bring then close. Sanjiv does take a not of that.
Then the story lures in to the past and history of Meethi – what was the reason of her mental situation? What caused her problem? Or were there more reasons for the same? What can Anu do to improve her situation? Would Anu’s care and dutifulness to Meethi and her family create distance between herself and Sanjiv? Would Kunal be able to help Meethi, and hence Anu out of the situation?
Around the second half of the movie, Joydeep (Rahul Bose) with two kids and wife (Shefali Shah) are on vacation, to a place in Bhutan. Joydeep who is Bengali is married to a Tamil girl. Destiny has in stored something else as he comes across Anu and Meethi who are also there. Now, its time for Joy to narrate his part of story. Is there something in his story which has to do with Meethi’s condition? What happened to the love that was once present between Meethi and Joy?
The movie does teaches something new – about relations and about Schizophrenia, the life of a person in trauma, the life of a person nursing such a patient etc.
I would rate this Aparna Sen movie us a must watch, at least once.
